Patrik Schumacher, is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects and founding director at the AA Design Research Lab. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988 and has since been the co-author of many key projects. Together with Zaha Hadid he built up Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 400 strong global architecture brand.His completed projects include the MAXXI Centre of Contemporary Art & Architecture, Rome, which won the Stirling prize in 2010 as well as Zaha Hadid Architects first completed construction, the Vitra Fire Station(1992).
Patrik studied philosophy, mathematics, and architecture in Bonn, London and Stuttgart, where he received his Diploma in 1990. In 1999 he completed his PHD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University. In 1996, along with Brett Steele he founded the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association in London.
Since 2004 Patrik is also tenured professor at the Institute for Experimental Architecture, Innsbruck University and guest professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2010 and 2012 he published the two Volumes of his theoretical opus magnum ‘The Autopoiesis of Architecture’. In 2002 he curated ‘Latent Utopias – Experiments within Contemporary Architecture’ and is currently planning the exhibition ‘Parametricism – The New International Style’.
