The advances of new technologies, such as virtual reality/augmented reality, and the concept of metaverse will bring about a positive change to the area of education. The increase in multimedia equipment will assist education to become more diverse and vivid, especially in a post-pandemic condition, where new hybrid models will be further developed. Online education will become a catalyst for a new architectural expression to develop and be further enhanced through the metaverse.

Meanwhile, the current online education mainly relies on video transmission via the Internet, in which students participate in learning through a two-dimensional video. This causes a lack of socialising, which is a fundamental element of education. With VR/AR technology, education is expected to rely on a flexible system that provides diverse learning spaces in a hybrid way; a reasonable way to satisfy different needs of users – both online and offline – and provide a platform that can integrate the global learning resources to spread this knowledge. Our main strategy, therefore, is meeting personalised needs through gamification.

The AA School on Bedford Square is chosen to be the starting point of this project, as this is a prominent problem faced by multiple architecture schools. The premises of the AA School are strictly defined, have experienced several renovations in the institution’s own history while the number of enrolments continues to rise. Therefore, a fitting response needs to be crafted. Project Theseus establishes a mixed, diversified and adapting future school community based on the space determined by the specific user group and proposes to use the AA School as the starting point to provide a successful reference for future hybrid education.
