Our project re-examines the opportunities offered by the hybrid design territory between the human body and the minimal spatial construct for the living and the moving. Yona Friedman’s vision of a “mobile architecture” (1956) as per the post-war concept of “Existenzminimum” are revisited and contextualized on a near projection of the future where limited resources and climate shifts may drive new paradigms for the built environment. The research gravitates around the use of programmatic overlays and multi-potent spatial interfaces, whilst experimenting on amphibious environments as testing scenarios for extreme adaptive and transformational qualities. The large-scale interventions speculate on the concept of “soft infrastructure” as a strategy for a dynamic, distributed, and self-sufficient human inhabitation.
The Hydro Specter is an attempt to redefine the social order of living in the ocean. In the future, the deep sea will be seen as the main area that can meet all the needs of daily life. We see the ocean as an opportunity for people to be able to realize large-scale nomadism, so that each inhabitant can choose their residence, spaces and locations for their daily activities freely and flexibly.
With the help of scissors structure and inflatable technology, the whole living machinery is designed to adapt to the complex and changeable marine environment. This system also includes the timeline of social operation and the mobile changeable adaptations. Our aim was to equip the Hydro Specter to deal with potential risks and opportunities more flexibly in the future, striving to create a new living cluster mode.
